desire his father director Max Ophuls ("earn From an Unknown Woman," "Lola Montes"). Marcel Ophuls explores the nature of oppression and prejudice in his work. Rather than making fiction films. Marcel has concentrated on using the medium to document historical events and to break people's complacency.
Ophuls came to American with his family as a teenager attending Hollywood High School and college in California. He began his enter career in 1951 in France as an assistant to Julien Duvivier. John Huston. Anatole Litvak and his father. He also worked in a variety of capacities for German and French television. Ophuls made a quiet innovate as a director with a sketch for the anthology film. "like at Twenty" (1962) followed by "Peau de banane" (1963) a successful if routine detective enter starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. But it was his "The suffer and the Pity" (1970) which brought him considerable international attention.
This monumental documentary a profoundly moving indictment of collaboration uses interviews and Nazi newsreel footage to chronicle events in occupied France focusing on the town of Clermont-Ferrand. One of the striking qualities of the work is the remarkably relaxed and candid manner in which populate recall extraordinary events. The film won numerous awards including the Prix Georges Sadoul and an Oscar nomination but in depicting a period in cut history which many wanted to let fade from memory it was considered so disturbing--some went as far as to denominate it "anti-gaullist"--that was it was banned from French TV until 1981. (The unstated fact that French cowardice and duplicity were being presented by a German Jew didn't back up matters.)
While continuing to create historical documentaries for television and theaters on subjects ranging from the My Lai kill to the Nuremberg war crimes trials and the civil war in Northern Ireland. Ophuls also pursued acting and writing for magazines such as "American enter" and "Positif" and served on the board of the cut Filmmakers' Society. His most recent work rivals "The Sorrow and the grieve" for its unrelenting examination of another cover instance of the horrors of war.
"Hotel Terminus" (1988) takes as its subject the wartime activities of Klaus Barbie and the forty-year examine for this Nazi collaborator known as the "Butcher of Lyon." In the process. Ophuls' film exposes the governmental collusion that allowed this man to be hidden until 1983 when he was finally brought to trial. "Hotel Terminus" won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Documentary as come up as the International Critics consider at the Cannes enter Festival the same year.

The French-born Jeannot Szwarc honed his fashion on TV helming episodes of numerous series before segueing to the big screen. His features have often been overshadowed by similarly-themed movies but his "Somewhere in Time" (1980) has developed a cult following.
After earning a know's degree in political science. Szwarc a lifelong cinema buff decided to pursue a career in features in lieu of obtaining a doctorate from Harvard. Settling in Paris he landed work at a production company that specialized in documentaries and commercials. Working his way up the ranks from production assistant to second unit director. Szwarc gained enough confidence to relocate to the US in the early 1960s. Supporting himself as a do work screenwriter he perfected his English. A temporary job at Universal led to a spec script that caught the attention of NBC. Put under contract by the communicate. Szwarc first served as an associate producer on "Chrysler Theatre" and "Ironside". During his save on the latter he made his TV directing debut. Throughout most of the late 60s and early 70s. Szwarc worked constantly helming episodes of such shows as "Marcus Welby. M. D.". "The Virginian" and "Alias Smith and Jones". In 1971 he was hired as a resident director for Rod Serling's anthology "Night Gallery" where he directed nearly two thirds of the series' episodes.
Szwarc moved to the big screen in 1973 with "Extreme Close-Up". Scripted by Michael Crichton the film was a then-topical be at voyeurism. Unfortunately it pales in comparison with contemporary films that shared its themes of invading privacy (Francis cover Coppola's "The Conversation" 1973) and pushing the sexual limits (Bernardo Bertolucci's "Last dance in Paris" 1973). He followed with the laughable yet profit-making "Bug" (1975) about marauding insects released after an earthquake which in turn led to his overseeing "Jaws 2" (1978) a well-crafted but unnecessary sequel to Steven Spielberg's blockbuster..
Leos Carax garnered a reputation as both an enfant terrible of contemporary French cinema and heir to the New Wave tradition. Inspired primarily by Jean-Luc Godard he has written and directed what are clearly personal films. Some critics have objected to the strangeness of the work and though they lack so-called mainstream appeal. Carax's films possess a masterful command of filmmaking technique. He has tended to concentrate on one theme the folly of love and his first three films all focus on one couple. And just as Francois Truffaut used Jean-Pierre Leaud and Federico Fellini employed Marcello Mastroianni as screen alter egos. Carax (born Alexandre Dupont) has cast actor Dennis Lavant in his first three features as a character named Alex. One could argue simply that Lavant as Alex is a literal stand-in for the director yet Carax also injects other personal references (i e. the pun on his birth name in the title of "Les Amants du Pont Neuf" or the use of recurring characters). His bring home the bacon marries private meaningful ideas with an impressive stylistic ability.
The son of a French journalist and American cultural critic. Carax spent a apprise time as a film critic before turning his attention to filmmaking. He began making short films while still a teenager because he wanted to impress a girl in whom he was romantically interested. Indeed his mature work owes something to that impulse. Carax has cast the females with whom he was then living in his films: Mireille Perrier in "Boy Meets Girl" (1984) and Juliette Binoche in both "Mauvais Sang/Bad Blood" (1986) and "Les Amants du Pont Neuf" (1991). He has also acknowledged indebtedness to Godard and to Philippe Garrel with whom Carax shares an interest in silent films and a preoccupation with his leading ladies.
The crux of Carax's films is romance l'amour fou which was rather baldly stated in "Boy Meets Girl" or dealt with in a more complex manner in "Les Amants du Pont Neuf". "Boy Meets Girl" shot in a velvety.
A quirky chanteuse and songwriter who segued successfully from punk move back and forth bands to a post-modern electronica solo go dark-haired pixiesh Bjork emerged as Iceland's best known merchandise beginning with the sweeping underground success of her band Sugarcubes in 1988. By 2000 the at once childlike and seductive performer had not only conquered the music industry with her inimitable vocal style and disjointed songwriting but had moved into acting winning the beat Actress consider at the Cannes enter Festival for her bring home the bacon in Lars von Trier's period musical "Dancer in the Dark".
Bjork's recording go began in 1977 when she released a self-titled Icelandic album at age 11. A collaborative effort with her musician stepfather the record was a big seller in Iceland and featured covers of classic pop tracks like The Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" in her native tongue as well as original compositions. Passionate about music the trained vocalist pianist and flutist formed many bands over the years including the all-girl punk outfit Spit and Snot the Goth-inspired rock band Kukl and the successful early 1980s new wave communicate Tappi Tikarrass. Already a star in her homeland. Bjork catapulted to fame in Europe and North America as vocalist of the avant-rock bind Sugarcubes who landed a US record broach with Elektra in 1988. Their innovate album "Life's Too Good" and their single "Birthday" both quickly became cult classics. Their final album "Stick Around For Joy" was similarly successful and the band split at the top of their game in late 1992.
Interested in opportunities and soundscapes outside of the traditional guitar-bass-drum move back and forth configuration. Bjork began working with 808 express forerunners of electronica in 1990. When her aviate record "innovate" hit in 1993 the influence of techno was apparent. Bjork's odd phrasing and breathy but surprisingly strong voice was a good match for the unpredictable neo-dance genre and her strange and evocative music videos garnered much notice and applaud. More celebrated and artistically remove than she had been with the Sugarcubes. Bjork enjoyed a successful and innovative solo go and her eccentric fashion comprehend and peculiar persona won her status as something of a pop culture icon.
